Jude Bellingham's Late Goal Secures Draw for England against Belgium
Mar 31, 2024

Jude Bellingham's twenty-second goal of the year maintained the 2-2 draw between England and Belgium on Tuesday, and he sustained such an exceptional performance throughout the European Championship this year.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time at Wembley Stadium, the Real Madrid midfielder made it clear how important he is to Gareth Southgate's team ahead of the Euros by scoring to save England from losing two straight games after a 1-0 setback to Brazil on Saturday.
Belgium was on the verge of winning its first away game against England thanks to two goals from Youri Tielemans in the first half, followed by a penalty kick from Ivan Toney. However, with the game deep into stoppage time, Bellingham coolly tucked the ball past goalkeeper Matz Sels with a side-footed effort after controlling a feed from substitute James Maddison in a packed area.
It was his first goal at Wembley and his third overall goal for his nation.
Southgate, cheering from the sidelines, gave a celebratory fist pump. Having been substituted earlier, Tielemans turned and punched his seat angrily.
Bellingham is fast turning into a nation's and clubs' lucky charm.
He may have paid over $139 million to move from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid in June of last year, and since then, he has become one of the top players in Europe.
He is essential to Madrid's chances of winning the title and the Champions League this year as the leading scorer in the Spanish league with 16 goals.
In a year when Southgate wants to end the country's wait for a first title since the World Cup in 1966, he is also the driving force in the center of England's midfield.
Amadou Onana stole England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's clearance, allowing Belgium to take the lead in the eleventh minute.
Pickford was out of his goal when Onana passed the ball to Tielemans, who shot from outside the box and low into the corner.
In the 17th minute, Toney, who had been brought down by Jan Vertonghen, executed a composed low shot to the left in order to equalize the game, successfully deceiving Sels as he stood at the penalty spot.
But before they break through Tielemans once more, Belgium was in the lead.
Once again, England's defensive vulnerability was evident when Lewis Dunk proved ineffective in containing Romelu Lukaku on the right side. In the 36th, Tielemans met a curving header from the Belgium striker that looped a cross to the far post with the outside of his boot.
Bellingham's goal kept England from leveling the score, despite England's numerous opportunities.
Considering all the opportunities that have been presented to us, it is expected that we will achieve success. Nevertheless, Bellingham added that these two games will greatly contribute to our progress. I am confident that our manager will be pleased with our performance. Although one can never truly be content with a loss or a tie, we must strive to be satisfied with our efforts.
John Stones' early injury, which required a substitution after just ten minutes, was a blow for Southgate.
